The Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Adrenal axis (HPA-axis) is a hormonal system that helps the body to cope with stress. It acts on a slower timescale than the sympathetic nervous system, taking a few minutes to completely unfold. Chronic stress can lead to deregulation of the axis and cause disease.
